Summary
This video provides an explanation of one aspect of Systemic Racism and shows the background of how things today came to be. This video explains how you can live so close to someone else and still have less access to opportunities. This is a big problem that we have to face in society today and we should all take action, as the video says.
Key Details
There are many important things that you should take note of from this video:
Property tax is used to fund schools. This means the opportunities you receive from school are directly correlated with the average wealth of students that go to your school.
Red lining is the reason that many primarily African American neighborhoods are poorer than primarily white neighborhoods. Red lining was used for investors to decide whether or not the real estate was desirable or undesirable - whether or not the quality of that street was worthy of their money. Due to the racism at the time, the primarily African American streets were looked at as undesirable. Racism in the past is still affecting us today.
Owning a house and having access to higher education is the main way an American family can build their wealth. These privileges were blocked off from certain races due to red lining.
Even today, implicit biases give more job opportunities to those who are white. These biases may not be recognized by the employer, or even you! It is likely that you have implicit biases because that is how the prejudices of society have subconsciously shaped your mind and thought process. I challenge you to think about implicit bias the next time you make a decision.
There is no one cause for Systemic Racism, so the problem becomes harder to solve. I believe that as a society, we need to believe that the actions of the past are still having consequences today and realize that the issue is not solved.
Why it is Being Addressed
This is being addressed because it is unjust to give a select number of students more opportunities than others just because of the beliefs that were held in the past. We also need to change our way of thinking and try to get rid of the prejudice that we see everyday in our society. This problem will continue to haunt us generations in the future, but the least we can do, is change the biases we hold ourselves, and those of our friends and family.
How Can We Change This
There isn't going to be an immediate change and there are no simple solutions. This problem will need to be solved with gradual change. Whether you are a victim, a bystander, an activist or the subconscious attacker, you can do more. This society can do more to fight this issue.
Knowledge is wealth and wealth is knowledge. Through Stock Market Practice my goal is to help individuals have tools and gain the financial intelligence to change their individual life for the better. I can't change society, but I can try and help those who were born with less privilege have the resources to catch up and better their family for generations. I want to shift the tides and create equal opportunities for all. If you have an interest in the stock market and being financially literate; and you see the potential it has to help you and your family for generations to come, then don't get discouraged and keep fighting for the change you deserve. If this website changes just one life, then this effort will not have been a waste. Keep an open mind, and try your best, because that is all that can be asked.
